Boss tells mechanic he's making too much money, moves him to a pay-per-job commission—regrets it immediately when the mechanic stops managing his business for him: 'The office is filling up with customers, and the phone is ringing constantly'

"Boss told me I make too much money so he was putting me on commission"

The boss stands with his arms crossed next to an overlay of what he supposedly said to the employee about changing his payment structure from a fair hourly rate to a new, unfair commission structure.

vaxhc Typical flat rate argument. If you're flat rate you're paid to turn a wrench and nothing else. Good on you for telling him how it is!

JoetheOK I had a buddy that used to work loss prevention for a major department store. They got paid a small hourly rate but $50 per shoplifter they caught as a bonus. The shoplifters had to pay a couple of hundred dollars, pay for the merchandise plus give it all back or they'd be turned over to the police. In essence, the store made more per shoplifter than they were paying out.

My friend was really, really good at catching them so his weekly paychecks were pretty large, especially after he realized how much money he could make nabbing shoplifters. Unfortunately, the rest of the team started complaining about how much money he was making so his supervisor told him they were going to put him on a flat rate per week. He figured out how many shoplifters that equated to and only caught that many that week.

At the end of the week, his boss called him in and wanted to know why he didn't catch nearly ן" as many thieves this week as the last so he told him how the numbers worked out. He said, used to make $50 per shoplifter. I still do. If you want me to go back to my previous numbers, I'd like you to do the same". His boss reiterated that the rest of the team were upset their paychecks weren't as robust as his and he said that wasn't his problem. They could make as much money as they wanted to or the

A mechanic in blue shop clothes reattaches a brake rotor with a red impact wrench.
RabidRathian This reminds me of a story I heard (possibly in this subreddit) many years ago where people got bonuses based on how many tickets they closed, so the base rate (ie. the amount everyone was expected to be able to do) was kinda low, but if you put in a bit of extra effort and hit the higher thresholds, you'd be able to get a decent amount of money.
via www.reddit.com
The higher-ups decided to change things so that one of the mid to high bonus levels was now the base rate, but to even get the lowest new bonus level, you pretty much had to work at 200% capacity no-stop. The higher-ups then got all shocked-Pikachu-face when after a few weeks, the output of tickets being closed had dropped from 80-100 per person (or whatever the number was) down to exactly 70 per person, which was the new base rate.
